Dynamic Contests
نویسنده
چکیده
Considering several main types of dynamic contests (the race, the tugof-war, elimination contests and iterated incumbency ghts) we identify a common pattern: the discouragement e¤ect. This e¤ect explains why the sum of rent-seeking e¤orts often falls considerably short of the prize that is at stake. It may cause violent conict in early rounds, but may also lead to long periods of peaceful interaction.

Dynamic Incentive Effects of Heterogeneity in Multi-Stage Promotion Contests
Dynamic Incentive Effects of Heterogeneity in Multi-Stage Promotion Contests This paper shows that the incentive effects of heterogeneity may be positive rather than negative in dynamic contests with multiple stages. In particular, the well-studied adverse effects of heterogeneity in static interactions are compensated by positive continuation-value and selection effects. Due to these positive ...
متن کاملA Survey of Experimental Research on Contests, All-Pay Auctions and Tournaments
Many economic, political and social environments can be described as contests in which agents exert costly efforts while competing over the distribution of a scarce resource. These environments have been studied using Tullock contests, all-pay auctions and rank-order tournaments. This survey provides a comprehensive review of experimental research on these three canonical contests. First, we re...
متن کاملDynamic Tournament Design: An Application to Prediction Contests∗
We build a tractable structural model to study the dynamic participation incentives in online competitions. We estimate the model using publicly available data from 17 prediction contests hosted by the website Kaggle.com. We study how participants’ incentives are shaped by the contest design in a series of counterfactual exercises. Specifically, we study how disclosing a leaderboard, awarding d...
متن کاملThe Role of Feedback in Dynamic Crowdsourcing Contests: A Structural Empirical Analysis
In this paper, we empirically examine the impact of performance feedback on the outcome of crowd-sourcing contests. We develop a dynamic structural model to capture the economic processes that drive contest participants' behavior, and estimate the model using a rich data set collected from a major online crowdsourcing design platform. The model captures key features of the crowdsourcing context...
متن کاملContests with small noise and the robustness of the all-pay auction
This paper considers all-pay contests in which the relationship between bids and allocations reflects a small amount of noise. Prior work had focused on one particular equilibrium. However, there may be other equilibria. To address this issue, we introduce a new and intuitive measure for the proximity to the all-pay auction. This allows, in particular, to provide simple conditions under which a...
